| Perhaps the most popular
musical of all time, Fiddler takes you to the Russian village of Anatevka at the turn of
the century. There, the humble dairyman Tevye struggles to reconcile tradition and faith
with the realities of a changing world. As the challenges presented by his sharp-tongued
wife and five strong-willed daughters unfold, he must face each with courage and humor.
And who doesn't love the songs Fiddler made famous, such as "Matchmaker,
Matchmaker," "Sunrise, Sunset," and "If I Were A Rich Man"? This wonderful cast featured some seasoned Footlight
Players... Roger Foster, Susan Gordon, Russ
Fehrman, Kathy Smith and Terry Shaw as well as
some new players with marvelous acting talents (and promise for future productions). The
cast is rounded out with many second generation theater family members.
Fiddler on the Roof is based on
stories for in The World of Sholom Aleichem, a book which dramatically vivified the life
of the Jewish "Shetetls" in Czarist Russia... a picturesque. though impoverished
life that had disintegrated considerably as a result of World War I and was thoroughly
destroyed in World War II. |

| POST-PRODUCTION NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR
My wife and I went into this
show with the feeling that we were competing with the most memorable past show in
"Footlight Players" history. It was the busiest time of the year and one of the
biggest shows we have ever attempted. It had been a long time since we directed a play.
It just may have been meant to be.
Everything fell into place ahead of schedule. The cast was enthusiastic and cooperative.
The crew was the best ever. We cannot say enough good about everyone involved
Thank you to all the veterans who
worked behind the scenes to promote and help make the production a success. Thank you to
the cast, young and old, who brought many talents and worked so hard to perfect the play.
they made the play their focus and avoided the petty squabbling that sometimes goes on in
community theater. The musical numbers were wonderfully done, the chorus one of the best
ever at this theater in my opinion and the orchestra large with a beautiful sense of
sonority.
The producer, stage manager and crew
was the most organized machine ever to produce a play at Footlight. Set design, costumes,
props, makeup, lights and organization of backstage areas to make life pleasant all were
handled to perfection.
To list all the names of people who
made it go would be futile. I'm sure that I would leave someone out. I guess the best way
to put it is to say, "This was truly a community production.".
