It is a quiet Sunday evening in October of 1938. In the little rural town of
Shallowford, North Carolina the “regulars” are gathered at the general
store, owned and operated by local wise man Burton Mock (Larry Badgley).
While a few of the townspeople are concerned with happenings in the rest of
the world, most of these folks are only interested in local gossip. But
tonight is the night of Orson Wells’ “War of the Worlds” broadcast and
because of their banter and gossip they miss the disclaimer at the beginning
of the radio show. So when someone turns on the radio, they really believe
that the United States is being invaded by Martians. Believing their town is
under attack, these colorful characters rush out to protect their way of
life, led by a slightly officious choir director from the Methodist church,
Fred Martin (Nathan Mayse) and a one-armed veteran of the
Spanish-American War, “Mr. Roy” (Shane Pyle). Left behind is young
Ruthie Mock (Angela Stewart) with her friend Lonny (Craig Gifford).
Lonny’s fascination with science fiction has led him to realize the truth
about the broadcast-except no one will believe him. Ruthie, thinking she is
about to die before her life even gets started, vows that she will leave
this world a woman – and make a man out of Lonny while she’s at it. By the
end of the play, the people we want to grow and change do so. The others
remain the characters they always were and want to be, which is as it should
be. Other cast members in order of appearance: Jeff Wherley, Brad Fuller,
Jim Gauerke, and Frank Ackerman.
